KSS is now a well-established study support centre helping over 600 students every year with their needs, with attendance averaging over 120 students per session. It is well supported by the local schools and colleges, Tower Hamlets Education department and the local community.
The results of our students compare favourably with the Tower Hamlets averages and often exceed the national averages showing the difference KSS is making in the lives of these young people. KSS has performed with above average results in most years. To date, we have helped over 500 students' access good university courses up and down the country including Oxford and Cambridge, which would not, in most of these cases, have been possible without the academic support we provided.
Many of these former students, who have now graduated and in good jobs, keep in contact with KSS offering voluntary assistance in the classrooms mainly in a mentoring capacity and serve as excellent role models to our current students.
Responding to student demand, in 1996, KSS initiated GCSE courses in Maths and English for mature students as a registered examination centre. Numbers of students enrolling for these courses have increased annually to the extent that this academic year the school has been obliged to treble the numbers of classes provided. Nearly two hundred students have enrolled for the Maths group, the English groups and the ICT group. Local schools have appreciated the value of these classes to the extent that some local schools now outsource their students to KSS and appear on school timetables.
Most students have already failed once to attain the grades they require, some have failed twice. Reasons for this are many but the schools policy is that everyone should be given whatever opportunity is available. Courses are of particular value to the 20% or so of students who are in need of GCSE qualifications to enable them to pursue careers in teaching.
